Jennings Walter Daniel Alcock, 87 passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home in Jennings, Louisiana. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013 in the Miguez Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. LaMarylis Cotton officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30 AM until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, and from 8:00 a.m. Friday until time of services. Born December 14, 1926 in Elton to the late Elmer Verrett Alcock and Mary Elizabeth Jones Alcock, he lived most of his life in Jennings. Nookum, more affectionately called by his loved ones, was dedicated in service to his country and to his community. In 1943 he began his Navel service in San Diego assigned as a member of the USS Long Islands crew. His ship, CVE1 escorted the aircraft carrier USS Long Island, and served in the Magic Carpet Operation. Walter returned home in 1946 and was drafted a second time a few months after the Korean War erupted, he returned for duty again, January 1951. This time he was assigned to CBE114, escort carrier to the USS Rendova. During this tour he served in Yokosuka, Yokohama, Japan and in the East China Sea south of Korea. He served under the titles of Petty Officer, helmsman, coxswain for liberty runs and gunners mate. Walter D. Alcock was honored by both the United State and by South Korea in 1994, with citation and medal naming him an Ambassador for Peace . Upon returning to civilian life, Nookum established himself as a master craftsman in sheet metal. He was a founding co-owner of A & B Sheet Metal of Jennings. His sheet metal career spanned more than 50 years in his community. He was an active member of the Jennings United Methodist Church. He enjoyed family, fishing and traveling. Walter Alcock also served his VFW Post #3686 for many representing the War Veterans of Jennings and Southwestern Louisiana as both a District Commander and Post Commander. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Evelyn Verian Alcock Broussard. Surviving are his devoted wife, Katherine Olive Branch Alcock, her children, Harold (Pam) Hudgens of Arlington, TX, Stephen (Belinda) Hicks of Jennings, LA, Claudia Colquette of Oakdale, LA, a sister, Elmeretta Loughlin of Jennings, a brother, Elmer (Jean) Alcock of Jennings. His nieces and nephews are Gaynell Broussard Demas of Hope, Al, Marilyn Broussard Andrus of Kerrville, TX, John J. Loughlin II of San Antonio, TX, Robert T. Loughlin, Jr. of Cibolo, TX and Patrick E. Loughlin, Sr. of Onalaska, TX, seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Walter has an extensive family to include many step-grandchildren and great grand nieces and nephews. All of who loved and cherished the man they knew as “Nookum”. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make donations to the charity of your choice.
