She gave a strong fight against cancer with the assistance, medical treatment and support of M. D. ANDERSON CANCER CENTER IN Houston, Texas. Her wishes were for everyone to receive early detection exams for cancer diagnosis. Ms. McAvoy was a resident of Jennings, LA. and a member of the 1957 graduating class of Jennings High School. She attended McNeese State University, then later moved to Houston, Texas to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in downtown Houston. During her travels to M.D. Anderson she revisited the original Southwestern Bell Telephone Company Building where she worked as an operator for 6 years, now A. T. and T. of Houston. She then met her husband, moved back to Jennings and had her family and a career in Social Service. Ms. McAvoy retired this April from the Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles in Jennings. She was also employed by the Assist Agency and Jeff Davis Community Action for 15 years. She served on the Calcasieu Legal Aid Board representing Jefferson Davis Parish clients legal issues for 5 years. Ms. Elaine also served on the board at Caring Hands in Jennings and was a volunteer Pink Lady at the Jennings American Legion Hospital where she proudly accepted her 100 hours-plus volunteer pin. Her daughter, Carol, wanted everyone to know during her diagnosis she spoke often and respectively of all of her co-workers, friends and volunteer partners. She read her Bible faithfully each morning and every evening, praying for others. Jesus came first in her life and her family always jokingly accepted they had to wait after she read her morning scriptures before calling or visiting. Elaine McAvoy was preceded in death by her mother, Willie Mae PharrV. Guthrie, her beloved son “in-law of 18 years, Patrick L. Red Cormier of Jennings and a special nephew, 16 year old Colton G. Slusser of Highlands, Tx. Ms. Elaine was also a caring Grand Pet-Parent to Kemah, the family boxer, who unfortunately passed away in 2008. Survivors include her daughter, Carol Cormier and brother, Paul William Vincent, both of Jennings, her niece, Barbara Vincent Slusser; her husband Grant Slusser and nephew, Dallas G. Slusser of Highlands, Tx. Pallbearers will be announced due to Hurricane Isaac. In lieu of flowers she had requested donations be made to the Miles Perret Cancer Services of Lafayette. 2130 Kaliste Saloom Road, Suite 200, Lafayette, La. 70508 or to the ARF of Jennings.
