Rolland J Mccown

July 6, 1931 — January 8, 2022

As Paw Paw Mac selectively said “Love ya man,” Rolland James McCown was well loved and will be greatly missed by many.

Rolland James McCown, 90, of Welsh, died peacefully at Cornerstone Hospital on Jan. 8, 2022. Rolland was born on July 6, 1931, in Welsh to Jesse and Sadie Lee McCown. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Vernon, and sister Jo Ann Sullivan.

Rolland served as a forward observer in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged as Sergeant First Class. He returned to his passion of farming in the Welsh area where throughout the years he was very involved in community activities. He served on various boards such as the Mosquito, Drainage, Cemetery, and First United Methodist Church Boards. He was a charter member of the Thrasher’s Association, as well as being a member of the Cattlemen’s Association, the Masonic Lodge, and the Welsh men’s coffee club. He was a big supporter of the Ag programs, FFA, and the Greyhound football team. He was the official president and “boss” of the Rice Pady Dady Ski Team. He will be fondly remembered for water skiing on his back and teaching many young people to ski. He enjoyed duck hunting, deep sea fishing, and training Sally, his loyal lab. After retiring from farming, Rolland enjoyed meeting new people and visiting new places while driving his 18-wheel truck and trailer.

Rolland is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lorraine Hart McCown; his daughters Cheryl Leblanc, Lynzie Boudreaux (Mark), and Rollenda McCown all from Welsh; Ellen Shaheen (Harry) from Singer; and Dr. Lezlie Cantrell (Jack) from Joplin, MO; stepchildren Wade Watkins (Carrie) and Paula Fox (Dominic) from Welsh; and Lisa Bird (Rick) from Double Oak, TX; 17 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Wed., Jan. 12 from 5:00 –  8:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Welsh with funeral services on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022, at 10:00 am at the church in Welsh.  Miguez Funeral Home in Jennings is in charge of arrangements.

God’s Garden

God looked around His garden

and He found an empty place.

He then looked down upon this Earth,

     and saw your tired face.

He put His arms around you

      and lifted you to rest.

God’s garden must be beautiful.

      He always takes the best.

He knew that you were suffering.

He knew you were in pain.

He knew that you would never get well on Earth again.

He saw the road was getting rough

and the hills were hard to climb,

So He closed your weary eyelids,

     and whispered “peace be thine.”

It broke our hearts to lose you

     but you didn’t go alone,

For part of us went with you,

the day God called you home.
