Jennings

Mrs. Phelps held a PHD in Philosophy but her life was spent as a devoted wife to her husband who was in the military.  She kept the home fires burning and raised her two sons while he served in front line combat in the 45th Infantry division in the European Theatre where he was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star with Oakleaf Cluster and the Combat Infantry Badge. After the end of WW2, Mr. Phelps transferred to the United States Air Force where he served at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon, South Viet Nam during the Viet Nam war. After returning stateside he was placed in command of the 12th Air Force Inspector General Team based at Bergstrom AFB in Austin, Texas until he retired in 1975. Marie Phelps was an amazing and constant companion to her husband, always taking care of everything while her husband traveled around the country inspecting AFB’s coast to coast.

Mrs. Phelps’ passion was helping those in need. During their time in Austin, Texas, she volunteered countless hours with the Catholic Church clothing, feeding, and helping to build shelter for the less fortunate in the community. After her husband’s passing, she moved to Louisiana to be closer to her family where she continued volunteering her time and energy with the Catholic Diocese of Lake Charles and Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Jennings.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Phelps and her parents, Juan and Victoria Lopez of Spain.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two sons, John (Doris) Phelps of Jennings and Leo I. (Sakool) Phelps of Sugarland, Texas and one grandson, Leo Kaoram Phelps, Jr. of Sugarland, Texas.
