Lemuel "Big Lem" Gravelle

Funeral services for Mr. Lemuel “Big Lem” Austin Gravelle, 86, former resident of Jennings, will be held on Monday, October 18, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. in the Miguez Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Eric Sonnier officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.

Visitation for Mr. Gravelle will begin on Sunday, October 17, 2021, at 2:30 p.m. and continue until 8:00 p.m. It will resume Monday morning at 8:00 a.m. and will end with the 2:00 p.m. service.

Mr. Gravelle was born on July 7, 1935, in Hayes, LA, the son of Russell and Lydia Whitman Gravelle, along with his identical twin brother, Jess Gravelle. He passed away on October 14, 2021, at his residence in Lafayette.

He was a high school graduate and worked as a supervisor in the utilities sector. Mr. Gravelle lived in the Jennings area his entire life before moving to Lafayette around 1995. He was a member of the National Guard for 7 years.

He and his wife Sue (deceased) enjoyed the art of square dancing for nearly 60 years. He was a square dance caller, and he formed a local club called the Square Shooters. He was nationally recognized for his square dance calling all over the United States. Besides the love of his Lord, his beloved wife Sue and his grandkids, the Houston Astros were next in line. He also followed LSU and the Ragin Cajuns. He was a devoted grandfather who loved his two grandchildren, Austin and Cassidy dearly and could often be found following along in all of their extra-curricular activities.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Diane Gravelle of Baton Rouge; his identical twin brother, Jess (Janet) Gravelle of Houston; his two grandchildren, Austin and Cassidy; and his brother-in-law, Sonny Richard of Lake Charles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Sue and a dear sister, Eloise Richard.
