Joseph Serrin

August 11, 1938 — August 20, 2020

Jennings

Joseph Even Serrin left this world to join his Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 20, 2020.

Joe, or J.E. as he was known to his friends, was born on August 11, 1938. He lived in Grand Coteau, Louisiana until, at the age of 15, the Reverend Leonard and Thea Monceaux of Jennings took him in and eventually adopted him.  The Monceauxs greatly impacted his life and changed the course of his future. Once married, he moved into Thea’s mother’s former home next door.  This came to be the place where he, his wife, children, and grandchildren would forever treasure.

He was a graduate of Jennings High School and attended bible college in Chillicothe, Missouri.  Upon his return to Jennings, he married his sweetheart, Barbara Royer, and raised four children.  They were married 52 years until her death in 2012.

At the age of 19, he began his career at Coca Cola Bottling Company, starting out as a loader, working his way through sales, and eventually ending up in management. He remained with the company until the local plant closed in 1983.  As a natural salesperson, he also founded S&S Vending in 1974 and Super Sign Service in 1983.  Joe served as President of the Kiwanis Club from 1978-1979 and, until very recently, as Treasurer for the Jennings Housing Authority.  Quite possibly his proudest moment was being chosen as Living Word Assembly’s “Father of the Year” in 1991.  His children were the light of his life.

He owned several horses and enjoyed trail rides, riding in local parades, and attending horse sales around the country.

J.E.  had a heart for missions and was very active with The Gideons International.  On any given day, you would find his small Gideon bible in his shirt pocket, ready to share the gospel with any who needed a word of encouragement.  He taught Sunday School at Living Word Assembly for many years and experienced a dream come true when he took the trip of a lifetime to Israel in 1985. He was truly an Ambassador for Christ, showing love, care, kindness, gentleness, and compassion to all he met.

He is survived by his three daughters, Tammy (Mike) Rish of Jennings, Jody (Dale )Racca of Westlake, Darla (Kim) Crochet of Gotts Cove; one son, Kent (Anita) Serrin of Carlyss, LA; five grandchildren, Kevin (Jessica) Johnson, Jr., Tyler Crochet, Aaron Racca, Ryan (Mary) Racca, Misty Rish; and three great grandchildren, Gavin, Ian and Stevie Lynn Johnson.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Royer Serrin; his parents Rev. Leonard and Thea Monceaux; son-in-law, Kevin Johnson, Sr.; sister, Hilda Knott; and two brothers, Eddie and Johnny Serrin.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Monday, August 24th, 2020 in the Miguez Funeral Home Chapel in Jennings with the Rev. Mickey Istre and Rev Austin Spell officiating.

Funeral home visitation will be held on Monday, August 24th, 2020 from 9:30 am until the time of the service.

Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.
