Mr. Moss passed away on January 4, 2018 in New Iberia.

A native of Lafayette, Mr. Moss served in World War 2 in the Air Force Medical Corps from 1945-48. He then completed his undergraduate work in Education at LSU. He earned a Master’s of Education plus 30 hours from the University of Southwestern Louisiana.  He remained in the Reserve until honorably discharged with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1961. Mr. Moss taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science and mathematics in Lake Arthur and then taught junior high at Welsh-Roanoke until he retired with 27 ½ years of teaching in Jeff Davis Parish. He was admired as a “favorite teacher” by many in the area, instilling the importance of education in all that he influenced.

He remained intrigued with science, particularly the space program and astronomy the whole of his life. He also enjoyed painting and studied art under the tutelage of Mildred Hardy McKnight who hosted famed teachers such as Diana Kan, Chinese watercolorist.

Inspired by nature and God’s creatures and his love of science, he became involved with Dr. Frederick Urquhart, a Canadian zoologist with the University of Toronto who studied the migration of monarch butterflies. One season, he and his wife, Dolores and daughter, Paula tagged and released over 1000 monarchs, one of which was found by a young girl in Mexico and brought to her teacher, confirming their migratory path. He even attempted to mend the broken wings of damaged butterflies, allowing them to fly again.

He is survived by daughter Paula Moss Thompson and husband David and granddaughter Dana of Abbeville, sister-in-law Salomie Dugat of Crowley, and niece Charlene Sonnier of Jacksonville, Florida and her family.

Mr. Moss was prededed in death by his parents, Creighton Paul Moss and Aline Vallot Moss; wife Dolores Dugas Moss, brother-in-law, Arnold Dugat, and nephew Randall Dugat.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the ULL Alumni Association in Mr. Moss’ honor.
