John K Reed

January 31, 1931 — May 2, 2021

Mr. John K. Reed, 90, of Jennings, LA entered into heavenly rest on May 2, 2021, surrounded by a host of devoted family and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Reed will be held on Friday, May 7, at 1:00 PM in the Miguez Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Paul Estes officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.  Visitation for Mr. Reed will be held on Thursday evening, May 6, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  Visitation will resume at 11:00 AM on Friday and will continue until the time of service.

Mr. Reed was born on January 31, 1931 in Jennings, LA to parents Arba Louis and Amy Valdetero Reed.  He grew up in Jennings and, after high school graduation, he went on to college and played football for the Louisiana Tech University Bulldogs.  Afterwards, he was employed several years in the oil and gas industry.  He spent the bulk of his career in the home construction business as a building contractor.  Additionally, he drove a school bus for the Jeff Davis Parish School Board and endeared himself to many students during his tenure there.  He was blessed to be able to enjoy many years of retirement and could be seen riding around the town on his bicycle or driving his golf cart, waving to all he saw.

Mr. Reed married the love of his life and the prettiest girl in town, Jean Thompson, and they were married for almost 70 years.  They shared a wonderful life together and were blessed with five wonderful children (as he would say), and Mr. Reed’s love for his family was evident to everyone.  He was not a braggart, but if someone mentioned how great and accomplished their children and grandchildren were, then, by George, they were going to hear about his!

A patriotic man, Mr. Reed served his country in the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant.  He was well known in the community, and his love for God and family were apparent to all who knew him.  Being a faithful servant of God, Mr. Reed could oftentimes be seen mowing and tending to the grounds of his church home, Christian Family Fellowship Church of Christ, up until just a couple of years ago.

Mr. Reed is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Jean Thompson Reed; daughters Debbie (Carl) Detiveaux of Lafayette, Pam Guinn of Jennings, and Rhonda (Tom) Self of Bossier City; sons Kenneth (Colette) Reed of Jennings, and Wayne (Lisa) Reed of Cleveland, GA.  He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

Preceding Mr. Reed in death were his parents; three sisters, Frances Reed, Marjorie “Tootsie” LeJeune, and Melva Lee Reed; three brothers, William Reed, Jimmy Reed, and A.L. Reed, Jr.; and son-in-law Peter Guinn.

In final service to Mr. Reed, his grandsons and his eldest great-grandson will serve as pallbearers: Thomas (Teep) Guinn, Josh Reed, Chase Reed, Tyler Reed, Harrison Reed, and Jacob Guinn.  Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews: Billy LeJeune, Keith Reed, and A.L. Reed, III.
