Mr. Clement died Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at his residence in Evangeline.

Mr. Clement was born and raised in Evangeline, LA, lived many years in Roanoke, LA, and upon his retirement, returned to his hometown of Evangeline where he lived out the remainder of his life. He was a grandson of the late Jules Clement, upon whose land the first crude oil in Louisiana was discovered. Mr. Clement was a custodian at Welsh-Roanoke Junior High in Roanoke, LA and retired from the Jeff Davis Parish School Board after 21 years of service. Earlier in life he worked for Superior Oil Company. He served in the National Guard during the Korean Conflict and was a Boy Scout Master for many years for Roanoke Troop 62 and volunteered as a tour guide for the Jeff Davis Tourist Commission and as an interpreter for the CODOFIL (Council for the Development of French in Louisiana) French teachers.   He was a Third Degree member of the K of C Council 2855 in Welsh, LA, Optimist Club, Lions Club, Cajun French Music Association and Boy Scouts of American Committee. He was former Reserve Deputy for the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Evangeline.

Mr. Clement was known for his plentiful vegetable gardens and fruit trees in which he took great pride. He was a self-taught musician who played drums, harmonica, and ukulele, along with various Cajun style instruments. He wrote many songs, from his heart, and loved to perform them along with his favorite hymns. In 1960, he began performing Cajun comedy, became known as the Cajun Comedian “Anatoo”, and in 1965, he and his daughter, Grace (Saucisse) became regular cast members of the television show “The Happy Fats Marinae Show”. Also in 1965, he and his daughter recorded the oldest known Cajun song entitled “Papillon”.

The memories of Mr. Clement’s personal history, his life, and his experiences speak volumes of the deep love he had for Louisiana and the joy he felt in bringing smiles and laughter to people of all ages through jokes, anecdotes and stories. He loved life and lived it to its fullest.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 14 years, Esther Mae Bourque Boone Clement of Evangeline; two daughters, Kathy Thibeaux of Roanoke, Jeanece Doucet and husband Richard Jr of Jennings; two sons, Hubert L. Clement, Jr. of Welsh, Laurent Donald “Donnie” Clement and wife Susanne of Evangeline; one sister, Carita Goodreau and husband Ronald of Jennings; two brothers, Terry Clement of Evangeline, Grant Clement and wife Diane of Scott; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Clement is preceded in death by his parents, Laurent and Ada Bertrand Clement; his first wife of 50 years, Patty Barnett Clement; daughter, Marion Grace Clement; four sisters, Audrey Hoke, Melba Roberts, Thelma “Tilly” Brand, Cecile Cole, and one brother Purvis Clement.
