Hurricane Rita took the home where Sono and Hazel lived and raised their family . They moved in 2005 to their farm in Jennings where they have resided for the past ten years. After moving to Jennings, she and Sono loved to go back home to Creole to visit old friends and her 1st cousins. In her early years, Hazel better known as Tally or T-Tal by her friends and family, often helped her father Ojust Richard work cattle. She learned to cook, garden and can her harvest watching her mother, Amatile (Boudoin) Richard. She combined these two things in later life and instead of riding the range with the cattle, she cooked on one for the Cowboys. Hazel and Sono’s home was open to everyone, so many people became extended family and she never let you leave hungry! Family was very important to Hazel and she especially enjoyed hosting family functions like crab and crawfish boils where she was surrounded by those she loved. Her smiles were biggest when she had a grandchild and later her great-grandchildren on her lap. Gardening was not just a pastime but a passion and she delighted in showing off her canning skills. But if you knew Hazel well you knew her 1st love was mowing the grass! She mowed her own grass until the age of 93 on her new zero turn lawn mower. She was member of Catholic Daughers of America in Creole and later Hathaway; the Ladies Altar Society; the Creole Cowbelles and was First Lady to Sheriff James R. “Sono” Savoie for 24 years. Mrs. Savoie is survived by her husband James R. “Sono” Savoie, two daughters; Phyllis Savoie Pinch of Jennings, and Anne (Robin) Savoie Roberts of Creole, two sons; Mike (Claudia) Savoie of Lake Charles and Bob Savoie of Jennings, 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two on the way, special friend Nalva Theriot and adopted daughter Brenda LeBlanc. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ojust and Amatile (Boudoin) Richard, a grand-daughter, Sarah Henry, a brother, Lynex Richard and a son-in-law, Pat Pinch.
