George Weaver

September 1, 1936 — July 22, 2022

Major George E. Weaver, retired USAF, 85, passed away at Hospice of Acadiana in Lafayette on July 22, 2022.  Major Weaver was born in Houston, TX, was a native of Houma and a resident of Carencro since 1980.  

Services for Major George E. Weaver will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in Raymond United Methodist Church with Rev. Laura Nusbaum officiating.  Burial will follow in Raymond Methodist Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.

Visitation will begin on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. and continue until service time.

Following graduation from Terrebonne High School in Houma, he attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute (SLI), now known as the University of Louisiana, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in History.  After graduation, he married Ada May Whittington of Hathaway and joined the US Air Force, serving for 21 years before retiring at the rank of Major.  He served in several career fields including operations, missiles, and personnel.  George and Ada were stationed at numerous duty stations including Whiteman AFB, MO, Castle AFB, CA, Walker AFB, NM, Warner Robins AFB, GA, McGuire AFB, NJ, Sheppard AFB, TX, and Chanute AFB, IL where he received his master’s degree in Counseling from Eastern Illinois University.  Additionally, he was deployed to Thailand for a year during the Vietnam Conflict.  

Among the many medals, decorations and badges George received are Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon; Air Force Longevity Service Award with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars; Republic Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm; Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal; Air Force Outstanding Unit Award; Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with V; Air Force Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster; Meritorious Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.

After retiring from the Air Force, he worked at the then USL Counseling and Testing Center, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Education Department and at AIG as a Vocational Rehab Counselor.  His hobbies included hunting, shooting, flying, reading and studying history. One of his greatest pleasures came from playing bridge, especially with long time family friends Terry and Sharon Stevens of San Antonio, TX.   

He is survived by his wife, Faye Weaver of Carencro; his children: one son, Jesse (Michele) Weaver of Lafayette; two daughters, Ellen Weaver of Warner Robins, GA, and Susan (Sean) Zeringue of Southaven, MS; one sister, Barbara Schober of Houma; six grandchildren, Amanda Blanchard, Ian Zeringue, Olivia Zeringue, Ashley Weaver, Henry Zeringue and Robert Benge IV; and one great-grandchild.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ada May Weaver, parents, Harry Joseph and Annie Ruth Weaver and sister, Dr. Harryet (Sandy) Smith.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to close friend Betty Heidbrink and nephew and niece Doug and Sheila Kimball, all of Carencro.  Additionally, they would like to thank Hospice of Acadiana, especially the staff at Calcutta House, for their attentive end-of-life care.
