LAKE ARTHUR Funeral services for Mr. Fred Schlesinger, 80, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 22, 2014 in Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church with Msgr. Ronald Groth officiating. Burial with full Military Graveside Honors will be in the Andrus Cove Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home of Lake Arthur. Funeral home visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Sunday; and 8:00 a.m. Monday until time of services. A rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel. Mr. Schlesinger died at 7:30 a.m., Thursday, December 18, 2014 at his residence. Mr. Schlesinger was a lifelong resident of Lake Arthur and a graduate of the Lake Arthur High School class of 1953 and he attended SLI now ULL. He served two years in the U.S. Navy and eight years in the Naval Reserve. He retired in 1979 as Assistant Commissioner of Elections for the Louisiana Department of Elections, after twenty two years of service. Mr. Schlesinger was a member of the Jeff Davis Cattlemen’s Association, served four years on the Goretti High School Board; vice president of Jeff Davis Pachyderm Club two years, and elected to the Republican Parish Executive committee. Honors awarded to Mr. Schlesinger were as follows: Most Athletic of LAHS Graduating Class 1953, awarded Track Scholarship to Southwestern Louisiana Institution, Outstanding Reservist on two week cruise in the Mediterranean Sea, Outstanding Civil Service Award in 1964, Honorable Discharge from U.S. Navy, Colonel on Staff of Gov. Fox McKeithen, General on Staff of Gov. Edwin Edwards, Special Recognition for 22 years of service to the Department of Elections from Gov. Romer, Governors award for 25 years of service to the state of Louisiana, 1975 J.D. Cattleman of the year, and was inducted into the LAHS Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Rose Ryder Schlesinger of Lake Arthur; two daughters, Gwen Landry and husband Joe of Hathaway, Joy Huval and husband Ralph of Lake Arthur; one son, Clyde Schlesinger and wife Celeste of Lake Arthur; three sisters, Isabel Parker, Dorothy Smith and Bonnie Howard all of Lake Arthur; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Orais and Azema Dugas Schlesinger; two sisters, Eldora Tedesco, Leola Benoit; and two brothers, Albert and George Schlesinger and a great-granddaughter, Harper Lane Huval. Serving as pallbearers will be Bob Parker, Ory Huval, Luke Mandola, Jeff Dewitt, Albert Crader and Jason Hebert. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mark Henry, Thomas Pete, R.J. Bonin and George Guidry.
