Jennings Evelyn Verrian Alcock Broussard, a former long-time resident and businesswoman of Jennings, passed away in Kerrville, Texas, on February 24, 2011, at the age of 95. The oldest of four children, she was born in Elton, LA, on January 18, 1916, to Elmer Verrett and Mary Elizabeth Jones Alcock. Her early years were spent in the Elton area until the family moved to Jennings where she attended high school and graduated with the class of 1933. Her first job was working for Rosebud Moses, her mentor and friend for 50 years. A blind date led to love and then marriage in 1936 to Walter Howard Broussard. Together they raised a family, worked, and served the community of Jennings until his death in 1972. They owned the Courthouse Cafeteria, a favorite local restaurant in the 1950s and 60s. Later they managed the Zigler Hotel and Convention Center. After Walters death, Evelyn managed the Jeff Davis Country Club for many years. Returning to work for Rosebuds was one of her last jobs in the community. She is remembered by many as an outstanding cook and caterer, having provided delicious meals for many events in the Jennings area. She continued to live in Jennings until 2000 when declining health made it necessary for her to move to Fairhope, AL, to live with her daughter, Gaynell. In 2007, she moved to Kerrville, TX, to be with her daughter, Marilyn. She remained a member of Jennings United Methodist Church until her passing. Her life was faith in action: she served God by serving others. Evelyn is survived by her two daughters and their spouses: Gaynell and Charles Dumas of Fairhope, AL; and Marilyn and Mike Andrus of Kerrville, TX. Other survivors include her beloved sister Elmeretta Loughlin; her loving brothers and their spouses, Elmer Sonny and Jean Alcock, and Walter Nookum and Olive Alcock, all of Jennings. Also left to cherish memories of Grandma B, or Grammie, as she was affectionately called, are 5 grandchildren and their spouses: Bill and Kim Dumas of Aulander, NC; Connie Walsh of Decatur, AL; Tom and Lynn Andrus of Highland Village, TX; Sherry Robinson of Keller, TX; and Kerry and Hunter Harris of Friendswood, TX; 12 great grandchildren: Amanda, Rebecca, Austin, Bryan, Summer, Kyle, Garrett, Ashley, Molly, Drew, Hallie and Torrie; and 1 great-great grandson, Cole. Additional loved ones include nephews John Loughlin, Bob Loughlin and Pat Loughlin and their families; and nieces Patricia Daniels, Paula Daigle, Emma Borel, Sandy Burwell, and Kathy Guidry and their families. Great-grandson Clay Dumas preceded her in death. A Service of Thanksgiving and Celebration of her life will be held on March 19, 2011, at 11:00 AM at the Jennings United Methodist Church in Jennings, LA with Reverend Ted Freeland and Reverend Jimmie Pyles officiating. Graveside services will be at Greenwood Cemetery at 1:30 PM. Louisiana services are under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Evelyns memory may be made to the Jennings United Methodist Church, 702 Cary Avenue, Jennings, LA 70546, or to the charity of your choice.
