JENNINGS The family of Curtis J. Hanks announces his passing into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. Mr. Hanks passed away peacefully at the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home in Jennings surrounded by loved ones. He was 78 years old. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, October 14, 2010 in Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church with Rev. Charles McMillin officiating. Funeral home visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., today, Wednesday; and 8:00 a.m. Thursday until time of services. A rosary and scripture service will be held at 7:00 p.m. today, Wednesday in the funeral home chapel. Burial with Military Graveside Honors will be in the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home of Jennings. Curtis was born in Lake Arthur, LA to Adolph and Leoncia Leger Hanks on July 29, 1932. He was a graduate of Jennings High School and Matthews Business College. He married Kay Shirley Miguez on May 29, 1953. Curtis served his country honorably in the Army and was stationed in Germany from 1954-1955. He spent 27 years in the Army National Guard and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Hanks worked in the Jeff Davis Parish Tax Assessors office for 31 years. He served as the Tax Assessor for three elected terms until his retirement in 1992. Curtis was beloved by his family and friends. He was an extraordinary man who loved life and the people around him. He was always ready to help anyone in need. He generously gave of his time to many service and civic organizations, including serving as President of the Lions Club and the OLI School Board. He had a strong faith and was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, where he served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister for many years. He was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. Curtis was an avid golfer, an accomplished woodcrafter, and enjoyed dancing. He shared his love of life with his grandchildren, who loved French dancing with Poppy. Left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 57 years, Kay Miguez Hanks; his four children, Greg Hanks of Sulphur, Scott Hanks and wife Tammy of Little Creek, Rachel Hoag and husband Ken of Slidell and Andrea Metzger and husband Joe of Slidell; also his sister, Aline Babineaux and husband Jim. Poppy will be cherished and missed by his thirteen grandchildren, Misti Follis and husband David, Mandi Stanga and husband Chris, Brady Hanks and wife Ashley, Kori, Justin and Christopher Hanks, Kayleigh Hoag Meyer, Jordan, Jamey and Matthew Hoag, Julia and Alexander Lewis and Sarah Metzger, also by his seven step grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Now Curtis rests in Heaven with his beloved parents, Adolph and Leoncia Hanks. Carrying Curtis to his final resting place will be his grandsons, Brady Hanks, Justin Hanks, David Follis, Christopher Hanks Jamey Hoag and Chris Stanga. Serving as honorary pallbearers are his grandsons, Matthew Hoag and Alexander Lewis, nephew and godson, Tony Babineaux. The family would like to express their thanks to Odyssey Hospice and the staff of the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home.
