Lake Arthur A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, May 26, 2014 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church celebrating the life of Austin Joseph Sonny Abshire, Jr. The celebrant will be Rev. Charles McMillin. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home of Lake Arthur. Funeral home visitation will begin Sunday, May 25, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary being recited at 6:00 p.m… Visitation on Monday will be from 8:00 a.m. until the time of service. Mr. Abshire died Friday, May 23, 2014 at 8:15 p.m. at his residence. Sonny was born on September 6, 1935 to Austin and Mary Sonnier Abshire. He was raised by his grandparents Leo and Ovenia Sonnier in Klondike, LA. Sonny was a 1954 graduate of Gueydan High School. In 1956 he began working for The Superior Oil Company at the Lowry Gas Plant in Lowry, LA and retired from there as a plant operator in 1990. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. He served from 1976 to 2000 as a Jefferson Davis Parish Police Juror. He served the Lake Arthur community as a volunteer fire fighter for over thirty years. He was a member of the Jean LaFitte Pirates. Sonny is survived by his wife; Hershel Mae Broussard Abshire of Lake Arthur, three sons; Allen Abshire of Houston,TX, Danny Abshire and Bart (Rachel) Abshire and a daughter; Debbie Abshire all of Lake Arthur, nine grandchildren; Adrienne Abshire Hanks, Amielle Abshire, Schuylor Foti, Allen Abshire, Jr., Alyssa Abshire LaPointe, Brandon Abshire, Justin Abshire, Tate Abshire and Lana Abshire; 10 great grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Vincent of Lake Arthur, and a brother, Bobby Abshire of Lake Charles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Mary Abshire, his first wife, Jacqueline Dupont Abshire, his step-daughter Veronica Dugas, his paternal grandparents Leo and Ovenia Abshire, two brothers, Logan Abshire and Carl Abshire and a sister, Brenda Abshire Myers. Serving as pallbearers will be Brandon Abshire, Joe Abshire, Barry Abshire, Kevin Sonnier, David Sonnier and Douglas Sonnier. Honorary pallbearers will be Valrie Guidry, Jr., Royal Hebert and Tate Abshire.
